From Oaxaca to Portland: The Journey Behind Tierra del Sol
Tierra del Sol Cuisine was founded in 2013 by an immigrant woman who desired to share the rich culture of her hometown in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Her dream was to share a piece of home to her new community in the rainy city of Portland, Oregon.
She longed for the food that connected her to her family, and decided to open her first food cart in 2015, specializing in Oaxacan Cuisine.
Amalia Sierra, owner of Tierra del Sol, filled her menu with tradition, keeping the stories of her people alive.
Honoring Oaxaca’s ‘Land of the Sun’
The name of this business, “Tierra del Sol,” is inspired by the popular song Canción Mixteca by Oxacan composer José López Alavez written in 1912.
This song shares the profound nostalgia felt when missing home, and the longing to return to this “Tierra del Sol,” or as translated, “Land of the Sun.”
“Tierra del Sol Cuisine” hopes to keep tradition alive in every aroma and bite, honoring their home where families grew much of their own food and raised their own cattle.
Amalia often reflects on the times when her father planted corn, and her siblings helped raise goats. Her childhood chore was to hand make tortillas, and through the time spent with her grandma, mother and sisters, she learned the art of cooking.
All the food you will find here is cooked with love, intention and are recipes handed down from many generations. We hope you enjoy our little piece of home.
